All-on-4 Recovery: Timeline & Aftercare
Recovery from All-on-4 dental implants is faster than most patients expect. Most people return to work within 3-5 days, and the full healing process takes 3-6 months for complete osseointegration.
Immediate Post-Op (First 24 Hours)
- Bleeding — Mild bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours. Bite on gauze pads, changing them every 30-45 minutes.
- Swelling — Peak swelling occurs at 48-72 hours. Apply ice packs (20 min on, 20 min off) for the first 48 hours.
- Pain — Managed with prescribed pain medication. Most patients transition to ibuprofen within 3-4 days.
- Diet — Liquid and very soft foods only. Smoothies, soups, yogurt, protein shakes, applesauce.
- Activity — Rest entirely. No bending, lifting, or exercise.
Days 2-7
- Swelling begins to subside after day 3
- Transition from ice packs to warm compresses
- Continue soft food diet — add mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, pasta
- Gentle rinsing with prescribed antibacterial mouthwash (no vigorous swishing)
- Most patients fly home by day 5-7
Weeks 2-4
- Most swelling and bruising fully resolved
- Gradually introduce more solid foods (avoid hard, crunchy, sticky items)
- Stitches dissolve or are removed at your follow-up
- Return to normal daily activities and work
- Begin gentle brushing around the implant area
Months 1-6 (Osseointegration Phase)
- Implants fuse with your jawbone — this is the critical healing phase
- Continue wearing your temporary teeth normally
- Maintain a mostly normal diet (avoid extremely hard foods)
- Excellent oral hygiene is essential — brush twice daily, use a water flosser
- Regular virtual check-ins with your dentist
What to Avoid During Recovery
- Smoking — Significantly increases implant failure risk. Stop at least 2 weeks before and during healing.
- Hard foods — Nuts, ice, hard candy, crusty bread can damage temporary teeth
- Straws — Suction can dislodge blood clots and interfere with healing
- Strenuous exercise — Avoid for at least 1 week post-surgery
- Alcohol — Can interfere with healing and medication
Signs of Complications
Contact your dentist immediately if you experience:
- Severe pain that doesn't respond to medication after 3 days
- Excessive bleeding that doesn't stop with gauze
- Fever above 101°F (38.3°C)
- Pus or discharge from the surgical site
- Loose-feeling implants or temporary teeth
Most clinics provide a 24/7 emergency contact number for post-op patients. Don't hesitate to use it.
